Gersh Academy, located in West Hempstead, NY, is looking for a dedicated
Physical Education Teacher to serve as the Primary Educator for our students. Main responsibilities include instruction and daily communication with students assigned to you in a school setting.
Gym Teacher Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and implement engaging physical education lesson plans adapted for students on the autism spectrum, aligned with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Promote physical fitness, motor skill development, teamwork, and social-emotional growth through structured physical activity.
- Ensure a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment during all physical education activities.
- Use visual supports, sensory-friendly equipment, and structured routines to maintain student engagement.
- Collaborate with classroom staff, therapists, and behavior specialists to support student needs.
- Record daily attendance and maintain session notes detailing activity goals and outcomes.
- Monitor and document individual student progress in physical fitness and motor development.
- Participate in IEP and CSE meetings as needed.
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians and team members regarding student progress and goals.
- Assist with school-wide wellness events or adaptive sports days.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Physical Education, Special Education, or a related field.
- NY State Physical Education Teaching Certification required.
- Experience working with students with autism and related disabilities strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with adaptive physical education techniques and strategies.
- Strong classroom management and motivational skills.
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) training preferred or willingness to obtain.
Location & Schedule
Location: West Hempstead, NY
Schedule: Monday–Friday / 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
*Occasional before and after school work hours may be required at the discretion of the administrative staff.*
Setting: School gymnasium and classroom settings
This is a 12-month school program.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to demonstrate physical activities, assist students with physical challenges, and implement CPI procedures when necessary.
Must be able to remove oneself from potentially harmful situations and, in some cases, lift or support a child.

The Pay Range For This Role Is
62,000 - 80,000 USD per year(West Hempstead)
