The Registered Nurse is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility for a group of consumers for a designated time frame and providers care to those consumers via the therapeutic use of self, the nursing process, the therapeutic environment, treatment and modalities and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
The essential functions listed here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the job.
- Conduct nursing assessments, particularly psychiatric assessments ad assessment of consumers medication management.
- Provide physician extender services, including triage, AIMS, coordination of lab results and obtaining authorizations for ordered medications.
- Administer medications per physician order.
- Perform Venipuncture Signs as ordered or as indicated by nursing assessment.
- Perform AIMS, PBRS, and other assessment scales.
- Provide patient teaching to individuals and to groups regarding mental health, medication, and other health-oriented or supportive topics.
- Visits consumer in home or community when appropriate.
- Provide phone support and crisis intervention as indicated.
- Advocate for needed medical, dental, and prevention services when appropriate.
- Coordinate consumer care with PCP, pharmacy, and/ or other healthcare providers as needed.
- Assess consumer; s ability to self-administer medications.
- Fill medication minders for consumers unable to safely self-administer and documentation rationale for such need.
- Identify all consumers clearly before the administration of any medication.
- Document nursing care accurately, appropriately, timely, and legibly.
- Document all appropriate changes from baseline assessments.
- Place verbal/ telephone orders with established unit policies and standards.
- Bill for services honestly and accurately.
- Participate in Quality Improvement activities, i.e., reviewing documentation, consumer care and departmental and Center policies.
- Maintain safe and clean consumer care work area.
- Use work time productively. Monitor productivity reports on a weekly or daily basis.
- Participate in orientation of new staff members when requested.
- Precept nursing students assigned to your unit per guidelines.
- Promote positive relations between the specific units and other departments, consumers, physicians, and community agencies.
- Maintain confidentiality concerning consumer/ Center information.
- Communicate effectively with consumer/ family to elicit essential information with accuracy and timeliness.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Associates or Bachelors in nursing with 18months experience in psych/ mental health or mental retardation preferred.
- Texas RN Licensure
Mathematical Skills
- Basic math skills required.
- Ability to work with reports and numbers.
- Ability to calculate moderately complex figures and amounts to accurately report activities and budgets.
Reasoning Ability
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
- Administer medication competently and safely.
- Able to apply appropriate theory that is scientifically sound as a basis for decisions regarding nursing practice.
- Able to identify consumers needs and problems supported by assessments.
- Intervenes as guided by the plan of care to implement nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore physical and mental health, prevent illness and effect rehabilitation.
- Performs Venipuncture skills using accepted technique including universal precautions.
- Perform nursing assessment effectively, appropriately, and timely.
- Demonstrates ability to manage consumers on medication commonly used by this Center.
- Demonstrates ability to carry out medical orders as directed after clearly considering implications of appropriateness for the consumer, relationship to current therapy under way and integration with nursing standards.
- Carries out teaching protocols utilizing available resources and evaluates consumers response to education.
- Adhere to guidelines of the BNE rule regarding delegation.
- Perform approved CPR and PMAB when required.
- Use equipment according to nursing policies and procedures.
- Able to successfully use and automated clinical record keeping system.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and adhere to Centers safety regulations, disaster plan, infection control policies, fire safety regulations and hazardous materials.
- Articulate and demonstrate professional image daily to consumers, other professionals and the public as evidenced by level of practice.
Computer Skills
- Use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
- Ability to utilize Internet for resources.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations
- Current State of Texas Driver License or if you live in another state, must be currently licensed in that state. If licensed in another state, must obtain Texas Driver License within three (3) months of employment.
- Liability insurance required if employee will operate personal vehicle on Center property or for Center business. Must be insurable by Centers liability carrier if employee operates a Center vehicle or drives personal car on Center business. Must have an acceptable driving record.
